Sophie Deller
Sophie is an experimental illustrator and multidisciplinary artist working across paint, textiles, ceramics, pencil, print, collage, and digital media. Initially focused on portrait hyperrealism and black-and-white photography, she now embraces bold colour and texture, transforming familiar forms into dynamic, abstract compositions.
With no preconception of the final outcome, Sophie begins each piece with a simple shape or colour, allowing the composition to develop intuitively. She distills objects to their most basic forms, merging the real and imagined to create pieces that feel both spontaneous and considered. Inspired by architecture, landscapes, household objects, shadows, and light, her work explores the harmony and contrast of shape and space. The tactile nature of textiles and the fluidity of paint add depth, making texture a key element of her process. Music also influences the rhythm and movement within her work.
Sophie studied at Northbrook College before earning a BA in Graphic Arts from Winchester School of Art, graduating with a first in Illustration in 2017. Her final project explored the role of creativity in problem-solving, reinforcing her belief that artistic thinking extends beyond making physical art.
